3D Outreach Activities

If you are looking for a place where you can enjoy both sea adventure and relaxation, Moalboal Cebu Philippines is one of the best places where you can be. Known for diving in its famous Pescador Island and the sardines run near its shores, Moalboal Cebu has been one of the favorite scuba diving destinations in the Philippines.

Another side of Moalboal also features a wide stretch of white sand beach where you can relax and watch the sun set.

If you are heading to Moalboal from Cebu City {traveling north to south}, you can get a bus from the South Terminal in Cebu which will take 3-4 hours and will cost you around 100PHP (or 130PHP for an airconditioned bus).

Tip: Buses heading south will be heading to “Bato” place but there are two different routes. One is Bato via Oslob and the other is Bato via Barili {this is the one you want for Moalboal}. Buses are pretty frequent and come around every 30 minutes.

If you are heading to Moalboal from Oslob {south to north}, I believe it’s only a 1-1.5 hour drive. For this you want a bus that’s heading to Cebu via Moalboal .
The most popular Moalboal attractions are all under water – Panagsama Beach is full of dive centers with a variety of options.
The Coral Triangle is a 5.7 million square kilometer, roughly triangular area of tropical marine waters that encompass the Solomon Islands, Papa New Guinea, Malaysia, Indonesia, and our very own Philippines. With 500 species of reef-building corals and innumerable species of marine organisms that call these corals home, the Coral Triangle is dubbed the Amazon of the sea. Its rich resources are more than enough to sustain the 120 million people.

Being part of the rich Coral Triangle is what makes the Philippines an excellent, world-class diving destination. And in Cebu, beautiful dive spots are all over the region. Two of these sites are the internationally renowned Pescador Island and the equally famous Panagsama Beach (sometimes dubbed Basdiot). Both destinations are in the lively town of Moalboal in southern Cebu.
The big draw card is the “Sardines Run” which is a dense mass of fish which form amazing geometric shapes 5-10 metres under the surface of the water.

All the dives for the sardines are shore dives as they are located so close to the beach. Within a few minutes of descending, I could see thousands of sardines around me. It’s one thing to see the pictures and watching the videos, but the sheer magnitude of the schooling fish here is something completely different. I’m not sure if a school of fish adequately describes the sardines here.

At some points, the amount of sardines was so dense, they blocked out the sun. I could have stayed underwater for hours watching them pulsate through the water in the most hypnotic, yet elegant of fashion. It’s not every day that you’re surrounded by millions of fish at once!

Unlike other sardine runs around the world that are seasonal like South Africa, the sardines in Moalboal are here year round. South Africa’s sardine run in Port Elizabeth also attracts a plethora of predators which makes it a huge draw. In Moalboal, there are far fewer predators but those that are really lucky can witness barracudas and even Thresher sharks preying on the sardines. The sardines are here year round, 24/7, and seeing them is about as guaranteed of a thing as there can be in diving. They are located near the shore and one can either snorkel or do shore dives to see them.

Aside from the sardines, the diving around Moalboal is excellent. The diving around Panagsama beach is all wall diving, with some very healthy soft and hard corals. Macro life is teeming here as we saw numerous frogfish, scorpionfish , nudis , and shrimps You can also see the turtles . The diving is also easy as the wall ensures the currents are minimal and no one gets lost (just follow the wall). Water temperatures here are 28-29 degrees.
