Festivals and Parties for the New Year Celebration in Cebu City

Hi everyone, this is Ahmad Al-Shehary, the Arabic intern manager of 3D Academy

Time flies. It’s another year end. Everywhere around the world, you can smell the festival seasons coming. Christmas carols and New year songs are everywhere. In Cebu, it’s not just Christmas and new years. They will have another huge festival – Sinulog coming up in January right after the New Year Celebration. Wait? Excited for parties now?! Let me introduce to you all the upcoming celebrations in Cebu City.

By the way, it would be my first experience in Cebu to celebrate new year! In my last few trips to Cebu, I didn’t have the chance to have the Christmas and New Year celebration here. After participating in the Halloween Party held in the school last month,I truly understood how much Filipinos love to party and how crazy the festivals and parties here could be! It’s gonna be the best parties of the year!

So what are the upcoming celebrations we are going to enjoy in Cebu?

Coming up First – This weekend we will celebrate Christmas!! It’s so exciting. The school has already prepared for the party for us! We will exchange gifts, drink, dance, eat and enjoy the Christmas day with friends while doing lots of fun activities.

Then, at the end of the year we will celebrate NEW YEAR. In my country – Yemen, we don’t normally celebrate new year as it’s a western new year not ours. However, we would also have a holiday on this day where people just rest off. Hence, I am super excited for the New Year Celebration here as I heard here in Cebu everyone celebrate this day with crazy parties from midnight until the next morning.

I heard from my teachers that people would start flying fireworks to the sky in the midnight of New year eve everywhere in Cebu! People would start drinking, enjoying all the good meals and dancing from as early as the dinner time! I really couldn’t wait to join the fun!

In most other countries, after new year would mean going back to work and end of celebration for the year. Not in Cebu. There is a huge festival coming up right after New Year – The Sinulog Festival. It is the biggest celebration in Cebu and it happens on the third Sunday of January each year. In 2018, Sinulog festival will fall on 21 January. Guess what? 21 Jan is my birthday! I can’t believe I am going to enjoy a unique and very celebrated birthday next year! It is going to be a very special experience for me. It’s almost like the whole town of Cebu city is celebrating my birthday! Can’t wait!!!!

The Sinulog festival is one of the grandest, most distinguished and most colorful festivals in the Philippines. This festival is to honor the Santo Niño – the child of Jesus, who used to be the patron saint of the whole province of Cebu (In the Catholic faith, Jesus is not a saint, but God). This festival is fundamentally a dance ritual to celebrate the Filipinos’ pagan history and to recognize Christianity. There will be parades on the main street of Cebu city, around the Mango Square. Participants will wear bright-colored costumes and dance to the rhythm of drums and native gongs. The streets will be filled with all the vendors selling food and souvenirs and pedestrians dancing along the parades. Smaller versions of the festival will also be held in different parts of the province. There will also a Sinulog sa Kabataan, which is performed by the youths of Cebu a week before the Grand Parade.

With more and more youths joining the traditional parades of Sinulog, I heard that even Sinulog festivals parades are evolving to cater to the younger group of audience. Instead of the traditional dance, there would also be a Sinulog contest highlighting dancing groups from various parts of the country. The Sinulog Contest is traditionally held in the Cebu City Sports Complex, where most of the Cebu’s major provincial events are held. There would be street dance and many modern version of dancing teams participating for the dance battle. How exciting!
