Semi-Spartan Course

A course for those who want to study English with greater concentration within a strict schedule and strict rules. With a well-structured life that combines a vocabulary test every morning, a 21:00 curfew and 2 hours of mandatory study, you get results in a short time. Your own exclusive desk is available 24 hours a day. You can go out after class (until curfew) and all the services around the school are free: because 3D has the best location, the best environment and the best service, we can offer a “strict but comfortable” Sparta experience.

▶ 3D's Philosophy

What 3D values is a Sparta «strict but comfortable»

This is different from traditional “Sparta courses that are only uncomfortable and restrictive.” You can go out after class (until curfew), everything you need is nearby, and all daily services are free: because 3D ACADEMY has the best location, the best environment and the best service, we offer a well-structured environment that lets you concentrate fully on your studies.

At the same time, Japanese staff, including the school representative with a TOEIC score of 975 and a manager who was a secondary school English teacher, support students' learning. We handle all kinds of questions about English study methods, class content and how to take classes, exam preparation and more.

▶ Discipline

A disciplined study rhythm

A test every morning, mandatory study, a curfew and attendance checks. We offer a “structure” that removes ambiguity and lets you concentrate on reaching your goals.

▶ Comfort

A complete environment and good support

A dorm with 3 meals included, an exclusive desk available 24 hours, resident Japanese staff and the freedom to go out after class. We remove the factors that make it hard to concentrate.

4 Special Elements

The 4 disciplinary elements of Semi-Sparta

In addition to the regular course, these four mechanisms maximize learning effectiveness.

1
07:30-07:45 / Every morning, Monday to Friday

Vocabulary test

Every Friday you receive a list of 50 words and, during the following week, a 10-question test is held every morning. If you score below 80%, that day's curfew will be 19:00.

2
21:00-23:00 / Sunday to Thursday

Mandatory study (2 hours)

Each student is assigned an exclusive seat in the second-floor annex. Attendance is taken at 21:00; the 2 hours are for preparing and reviewing the next day's classes and getting ready for the test.

3
21:00 / 23:00

Curfew check

Sunday to Thursday it is 21:00, and Friday, Saturday and the eve of public holidays it is 23:00. Between 19:00 and curfew, you must hand in your ID card in person to the dorm guard to report your presence.

4
Check every Monday

Attendance rate check

If your class attendance rate is below 80%, you are not allowed to go out on the weekend. If this happens for 3 consecutive weeks, you will be expelled.

Rules

Rule details

Be sure to review them before enrollment. All these rules are designed to maximize learning effectiveness.

1 About the curfew and nights away

Sunday to Thursday (except the eve of public holidays)
21:00
Friday, Saturday and the eve of public holidays
23:00

Nights away from the dorm on weekends are allowed by submitting a request. However, they will not be allowed if the student's company, organization or home school has made a special request against it. Students under 18 need the explicit permission of their parents or guardians.

Between 19:00 and curfew, you must hand in your ID card in person to the dorm guard to report your presence.

2 Vocabulary test

Each week you receive a list of 50 words. A 10-question test is held every morning from Monday to Friday.

Below 80%: that day's curfew will be 19:00. The same test is moved to the next day, together with 10 new questions. You must score 80% on both.

Below 80% on the general test on Friday morning: no going out on the weekend, from 19:00 on Friday until Monday. However, you can retake it at the office until 17:00 on Friday.

Absence without prior notice: that day's curfew will be 19:00. Two or more absences in a week mean no going out on the weekend.

3 Mandatory study schedule

You are assigned an exclusive seat in a classroom in the second-floor annex (available 24 hours). Attendance is taken at 21:00, Sunday to Thursday.

If your presence cannot be confirmed, it will be treated the same as a curfew violation.

The 2 hours of mandatory study are for preparing and reviewing the next day's classes and getting ready for the vocabulary test.

4 Attendance rate check

Every Monday the previous week's class attendance rate is checked. If the attendance rate is below 80%, you are not allowed to go out that weekend, from 19:00 on Friday until Monday.

If the attendance rate stays below 80% for 3 weeks or more, you will be expelled.

Rate calculation formula

Base course rate ++ $30 × number of weeks

Example: ESL Course, 4 weeks, single room = $1,736 + ($30 × 4 weeks) = $1,856 (+ $100 enrollment fee)

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch to the regular course midway?

In principle, yes (the price difference must be settled and the dorm assignment adjusted). However, since the Semi-Spartan Course is designed with discipline to “get results in a short time,” we recommend trying it first before deciding.

Can't I go anywhere after curfew?

Sunday to Thursday, 21:00 to 23:00 is mandatory study time, so you cannot leave the dorm. After 23:00 you can spend your time freely in your room, although we recommend sleeping enough for the 7:30 a.m. test the next morning. Friday, Saturday and the eve of public holidays have a 23:00 curfew, no mandatory study, and you can go out freely.

Which course can be chosen as the base?

Basically the ESL Course is the base, but it is also possible to turn courses such as the Exam Preparation Course or the 6 One-on-One Classes Course, among others, into Semi-Sparta. Please ask us at enrollment.

How difficult is the test every morning?

In the level assessment at enrollment, students are divided into 6 levels and receive a word list matching their level. It is designed so that everyone, from beginners to advanced students, can reach it “with a little effort.” 50 new words are handed out every Friday.

Can I use the exclusive desk at any time?

Yes, it is available 24 hours. Outside the mandatory study hours (21:00-23:00), you can also study freely early in the morning, at lunchtime, in the evening and so on.

Can people under 18 take part?

Yes, they can, but to spend nights away on weekends, the explicit permission of parents or guardians is needed. We will tell you the necessary documents at enrollment. In addition, for children under 15 we recommend considering the Parent & Child Study Abroad Course.

What happens if I miss study because I am sick?

If you are sick and tell the staff in advance, you are allowed to miss mandatory study and the test. Only absences without prior notice are subject to penalties. Since Japanese staff handle support, you can feel free to consult us in Japanese.

When is the start day?

Basically, every Monday. On the first day there is an entrance test to check your level and an orientation; the vocabulary list is also handed out that day and the rules are explained.
